1. Moonlight

RottenTomatoes Score: 98% (9.0/10)

Box Office: On an insanely scant $1.5 million budget, the widely-loved Best Picture winner has made a jaw-dropping $25.1 million.

Verdict: Barry Jenkins' emotionally devastating look at one man's life through the decades may reek of Oscar bait from the logline alone, but it spectacularly transcends cliches to deliver a beautifully filmed and superbly acted look at the importance of self-acceptance.

A masterpiece in basically every aspect of filmmaking craft, Moonlight is provocative, challenging, heart-wrenching and ultimately uplifting. A truly noble use of the art form that's destined to endure as a black movie, as a queer movie, and simply as a film for anyone who's ever felt like an outsider.
