RottenTomatoes Score: 35% (4.9/10)

Box Office: With a $150 million budget, The Great Wall is by some measure the most expensive film shot in China, and to date has pulled in a mediocre $273.8 million. Not a total bust, but not very good either for a film with apparent in-built international appeal.

Verdict: Taken on its own terms as a hokey B-movie with cheesy one-liners and outrageous action sequences, The Great Wall is a lot of fun, though it's reasonable for viewers to expect a little more from Zhang Yimou, director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers.

Matt Damon's talents are mostly squandered in an over-the-top action extravaganza high on set-pieces and low on logic, but cursorily entertaining enough. Willem Dafoe needed a bigger, better part, while Pedro Pascal frequently steals the movie as Damon's wise-cracking sidekick.

Fine for a hungover Sunday on Netflix, basically.
