Ranking February 2018's Movies From Worst To Best

8. Roman J. Israel, Esq.

Roman J Israel Esq Denzel Washington

RottenTomatoes Score: 51% (5.8/10)

Box Office: Even with a fair $22 million budget and Denzel Washington in the lead role, Dan Gilroy's (Nightcrawler) second directorial effort has made just half its price tag back, in large part due to a difficult-to-market premise and heavily mixed reviews.

This was Washington's lowest-grossing starring role in over 25 years, but it'll almost certainly be nothing more than a blip.

Verdict: Denzel Washington's Oscar-nominated performance leads an intriguing if somewhat muddled legal drama that saddles Washington with an eccentric, difficult-to-like protagonist, and pushes him into some questionable actions in the movie's dubious third act.

Still, it's a challenging, consistently engrossing film in its weirdness, and could become a cult classic in a few years. Whatever you make of it, Washington's electric performance is typically beyond reproach.
