Ranking February 2018's Movies From Worst To Best

7. The Mercy

The Mercy Colin Firth
StudioCanal

RottenTomatoes Score: 71% (6.3/10)

Box Office: The $28 million Colin Firth-led survival drama has made just $1 million in the UK. Without the awards-baiting clout of other movies releasing around the same time, it's an unequivocal bust.

Verdict: Firth gives one of his best recent performances in James Marsh's tricky biopic of amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst. If you're not aware of the real-life circumstances, you might be expecting an inspirational tale about one man's triumph over nature, but be sure: this is not that movie.

Marsh gets down in the psychological trenches with Firth, delivering a surreal, discomforting and sometimes frustrating drama that's a little too meandering at times, but delivers an undeniable final emotional gut-punch.

The ambiguity of the true story may irk some viewers, but as a testament to doomed ambition, it has a sure magnetic quality.
