Ranking February 2019's Movies From Worst To Best

19. Alita: Battle Angel

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 60% (5.95/10)

Box Office: Alita is unquestionably one of the year's most curious box office stories, given its $200 million budget and the wide expectation from analysts that the movie would struggle to turn a profit.

Though it opened above projections in the U.S., it suffered a steep drop the next weekend and is unlikely to pass $100 million domestically.

Despite a record-breaking $65 million opening in China, Alita will probably land in the $400-450 million mark worldwide by the time it's all said and done.

Though this will (barely) nudge it out of bomb territory, it effectively kills any prospect of a sequel (short of James Cameron bankrolling it himself).

Verdict: A deeply frustrating film which combines gorgeous visuals, impressive world-building and a compelling Rosa Salazar performance with hilariously sloppy writing, a groan-worthy romantic subplot and a laughable sequel-bait ending, Alita is all sizzle and no steak.

It's certainly never less than watchable, but considering that it was writer-producer Cameron's passion project, it's a damn shame the end result turned out so generic and underwhelming.
