Ranking January 2019's Movies From Worst To Best
1. The Favourite
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 93% (8.5/10)
Box Office: Unsurprisingly the biggest commercial success of director Yorgos Lanthimos' career, The Favourite made good on surging awards hype and a killer cast to carve out $55 million worldwide against a svelte $15 million budget.
Verdict: If a tad broader than Lanthimos' previous dark comedies, The Favourite is still a deliciously entertaining period dramedy, girded by both its fantastic technical execution and design, and also splendid performances from Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and Nicholas Hoult.
Bitingly funny but also surprisingly tragic in places, the film sees Lanthimos delicately switching-up tones on the fly, and he pulls it off without a hitch. In a just world it'll win at least a couple of its ten Oscar nominations, but wait and see.
