Ranking Jean-Claude Van Damme's Boss Fights

4. The Quest

Van Damme's Role: Christopher Dubois, a notorious pickpocket and caretaker of homeless children, poses as an American boxer to participate in the Ghang-gheng (ancient version of the Kumite) to win the coveted Golden Dragon and take those winnings back to his semi-adopted children.

The Bad Guy: You get to see what the bad guy from Lionheart (Abdel Qissi) has been up to in the ensuing six years, and it turns out he's been growing a Tong Po inspired ponytail. Aside from that, he's learned how to throw a stiffer jab and appears a tad lighter on his feet.

The Fight in a Nutshell: The Quest is perhaps the most underrated entry in the JCVD filmography. This particular fight, however, isn't nearly as extraordinary as the rest of the matches leading up to it. As is so often the case with these boss fights, the villain is a silent brute more apt to perform a backbreaker than a roundhouse. But sometimes Van Damme does his best work when it's a one-sided affair, essentially fighting against a tree trunk that can occasionally feel pain. Besides, you get to see the most well-executed helicopter kick of Van Damme's career, and in slow-motion, nonetheless.
