Ranking Jean-Claude Van Damme's Boss Fights

2. Universal Solider: The Return

Van Damme's Role: Luc Deveraux, the last remaining Universal Solider from the original film, who must stop the new batch of Universal Soldiers and the supercomputer that controls them from going rogue and decimating the government.

The Bad Guy: MIchael Jai White is arguably the most charismatic and technically gifted villain Van Damme has ever engaged in fisticuffs with. A black belt in Kyokushin, White is one of very few on this list who can trade flashy kicks with Van Damme while still looking as if he could lift the Belgian over his head.

The Fight in a Nutshell: Although there is far too much expositive dialogue, and a few too many inanimate objects getting kicked around, this is about as athletically equal as viewers could hope for two action stars to be. Perfectly posed and just slow enough to accentuate every high kick, the scene isn't quite as consistently flashy as one might've anticipated, but the pacing is tight, and there are some stellar moves being traded back and forth. As far as star power goes, it may not be Jet Li vs. Jackie Chan, but it's about a thousand times more satisfying than Van Damme vs. Sylvester Stallone in The Expendables 2.
