Ranking Joss Whedon's Projects - From Worst To Best

7. Angel

Joss Whedon arrives at the Los Angeles premiere of
Mutant Enemy Productions

Angel is sort of in a tough position, and maybe it deserves to be higher on the list. After the tremendous popularity of the character on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel received his very own spinoff show at the end of Buffy's season four finale (taking a few other Buffy cast members with him on his way out).

This show took pains to establish itself as a separate entity from its parent show: Buffy was rarely mentioned, and everything from the story lines to the lighting made it clear that this was a grittier, more adult show. It took place in Los Angeles, with Angel heading his own supernatural detective agency.  And as lame as that sounds, it was actually pretty good.

In fact, when it was good, it was fantastic. There are episodes of Angel that can go up against the best that Buffy and Firefly have to offer. The only issue with this show is consistency; over the course of five seasons, there are just as many embarrassing lows as there are dizzying highs.

That said, it's still a worthwhile addition to the Buffyverse, utilizing the characters of Angel, Cordelia, and Wesley in ways that Buffy was never able to.
