Ranking Joss Whedon's Projects - From Worst To Best

6. Serenity

Joss Whedon arrives at the Los Angeles premiere of
Universal Pictures

When Firefly was unceremoniously booted off the air after one season, what should have been the end of the show was really just the beginning. Its fan base grew tremendously as more people had the opportunity to catch up on the show and fall in love with it.

The scrappy little space western became a bonafide cult classic. As its fame increased, so did the outrage from people who had quickly become obsessed with Firefly when they suddenly realized that there was so little actual material to their beloved show.

The practical result of this is that everyone began clamoring for more: bringing the show back on the air, a spinoff, a movie, anything. And finally, it happened. Serenity was born. And it gave us all that little extra shot in the arm of Firefly goodness that we had been jonesing for.

Let's be clear: no feature length film could do what Firefly fans were expecting this one to do in terms of healing open wounds. And while Serenity wasn't perfect, it did an admirable job of tying up a lot of loose ends that had been floating around, driving everyone crazy. It didn't totally make up for the tragedy of losing Firefly so early, but at least it let us sleep at night with the satisfaction that something had been done.
