Box Office: Christopher Nolan's $100 million war epic has already recouped its budget, a fairly modest price tag for the director, opening above expectations and ensuring it'll enjoy a healthy run even if it obviously won't touch Nolan's more commercial movies, namely The Dark Knight saga.

Verdict: Nolan typically delivers with this one-of-a-kind war film, stripping back excessive dialogue and characterisation in favour of a brutal shock-and-awe approach, bombarding the viewer with literally awesome images and an ear-splitting sonic frenzy.

Propelled by an impeccable ensemble cast and clever structural approach intended to maintain suspense over its admirably brief 107 minutes, Dunkirk is yet more proof that Nolan's one of Hollywood's most consistently reliable big-budget filmmakers.
