Box Office: The low-budget indie rom-com has raked in an impressive $25.4 million thanks to strong reviews, even if initial projections did predict a slightly higher opening weekend.

Verdict: If you're sick of patronising rom-coms and maudlin weepie dramas, The Big Sick is a fantastically smart and perceptive subversion of these types of movies, driven by a charming lead performance from the film's co-writer Kumail Nanjiani, not to mention fine support by Zoe Kazan, Ray Romano, and in an Oscar-worthy turn, the excellent Holly Hunter.

With its biting humour, sharp observations of extreme culture clash and lack of easy answers, don't be surprised if The Big Sick ends up a Best Picture Oscar nominee next year.
