1. Inside Out
RottenTomatoes Score: 98% (8.9/10) Box Office: With a budget of $175 million, Inside Out has grossed $164.3 million, which given the immense competition it's facing right now, isn't bad at all. Plus, with the movie yet to open in a number of countries, its box office run is just getting started. Most encouragingly, though, it broke the record for the most successful opening weekend of any original movie in history, scoring an impressive $90 million (topping Avatar's $77 million). The Verdict: After turning out three bad-to-good movies, Pixar are back with one of their best-ever films, a wildly imaginative and uproariously funny adventure that, at its core, is simply about a young girl's battle with depression. It's daring subject matter for a film aimed squarely at kids, but Pixar's trademark ingenuity allows them to depict heady concepts in a way that's both subtle and off-the-wall all at once. Voice performances across the board are excellent here, the animation crackles, and the short before it, Lava, is also delightful. Sure to be one of the year's best films, and it's pretty much ended the Best Animated Film Oscar race before it even got started (sorry, Minions). Which movies did you love and hate this past month? Shout them out in the comments!
