5. A Walk Among The Tombstones
Scott Frank (The Lookout) teams with Neeson to deliver the best of the actor's recent spate of urban crime thrillers, as private investigator Matthew Scudder (Neeson) is sent off on a murder investigation and uncovers plenty more than he bargained on. What really takes this one to the next level is that it boasts more action than the likes of Unknown and Non-Stop, and is also rather unconventional in teaming Neeson with a child sidekick for much of the film, street kid TJ (Brian Astro Bradley). The character development is effortlessly superior to the Taken franchise, yet the shootouts and set-pieces are still there too, and perhaps most surprising is the unexpected bouts of humour, many of which emerge as Scudder bonds with his pint-sized pal. Much like Run All Night, however, it didn't score at the box office, probably because the premise was too gritty and down-to-Earth, even though it's easily one of his better recent genre films. Do yourself a favour and give it a chance.
