10. Seraphim Falls
Director David Von Ancken makes a solid feature debut with this beautifully filmed western which sees Colonel Morsman Carver (Neeson) hunting down former Union soldier Gideon (Pierce Brosnan) for a past transgression. Though the pace is undeniably slow and the pic runs a little too long as a result, it's great to look at and both Neeson and Brosnan give finely gritty performances, even if it's Brosnan who probably wins the meatier of the two roles. Seraphim Falls isn't jam-packed with action but rather settles upon brief bursts of harsh violence, accentuating the movie's thematic consideration of revenge, realised well by the two lead actors even when the movie threatens repetition by the third act. Predictable ending aside, this is an enjoyable, visually lush yarn even if it's hard not to watch nowadays without recalling Neeson's ridiculous role in A Million Ways to Die in the West. Thanks, Seth MacFarlane!
