Ranking May 2017's Movies From Worst To Best

1. The Red Turtle

The Red Turtle
Wild Bunch

RottenTomatoes Score: 95% (8.2/10)

Box Office: The low-fi French animation has grossed $2.1 million to date, which considering its extremely limited release, isn't bad at all.

Verdict: With its wordless narrative and slow pace, The Red Turtle won't be for all tastes, but for those who can appreciate minimalist storytelling and traditional 2D animation, it's a refreshing change of pace from the glut of big-budget studio animations filled with rampant pop-culture references and an excess of colour.

First-time director Michael Dudok de Wit manages to tell a universal tale of survival through strictly visual means, and to that end it's an unexpectedly moving, aesthetically gorgeous effort that absolutely deserved its Best Animated Feature Oscar nomination.
