Ranking November 2016's Movies - From Worst To Best
5. The Edge Of Seventeen
RottenTomatoes Score: 95% (7.8/10)
Box Office: On a $9 million budget, the acclaimed teen comedy has grossed just $10 million to date, far below initial expectations even if it's hardly a total disaster in the long run.
Verdict: This is the rarest of movies aimed at teenage girls, a teen movie with fleshed-out, believable characters who exist in a plausible high school vacuum.
Hailee Steinfeld gives a marvelous performance as the focal teenager, aided by a script that avoids genre cliches and engages with her character as a flawed human being. Woody Harrelson also does a great job reining in a potentially stock teacher character.
Though its lack of definitive emotional closure and fairly dark central message may be too close to the bone for some, this is an immensely brave film that wears its heart on its sleeve while avoiding the overt sentiment that tends to clog up similar movies.
