Rotten Tomatoes Score: 20% (3.6/10) Box Office: On a tiny $5 million budget, Jem was predicted to make about that in its first weekend, but one-upped Rock The Kasbah by pulling in just $1.4 million, making it the lowest-grossing opening for a major Hollywood movie this year, and the fourth-worst opening for any movie released in over 2000 cinemas. A genuine surprise considering how easily it should've tapped into the tween market. The Verdict: A textbook example of why movie studios should think carefully about rebooting beloved, classic properties, Jem And The Holograms bears little resemblance to the 80s animated TV series from which it spawned. Even so, Jem's worst offense is just how boring it is, failing to muster up impressive song numbers or anything that remotely captures the essence of the show. Even with peculiar cameos from Dwayne Johnson and Chris Pratt (!), it looks cheap, is goofy without being charming, features intrusive social media references, is at least 20 minutes too long and squanders the talented young actresses at the centre, who are clearly pouring everything they have into this sorry, wretched enterprise.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
