3. A Star Is Born

Warner Bros.

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 90% (8.1/10)

Box Office: Bradley Cooper's $40 million directorial debut has just passed the $250 million mark worldwide, propelled by widespread acclaim, Lady Gaga's popularity, the success of the soundtrack and, of course, all that awards buzz.

Verdict: Impressively rising above its obvious familiarity, A Star is Born executes a potentially cliched premise with incredible skill thanks to Bradley Cooper's visually dynamic direction and splendid, Oscar-worthy performances from himself, Lady Gaga and Sam Elliott.

Loaded with show-stopping tunes but placing the focus squarely on the unexpectedly involving human drama, this is profoundly affecting, expertly calibrated drama that manages to be both artful and crowd-pleasing.
