Ranking October 2018's Movies From Worst To Best
4. First Man
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 88% (8.1/10)
Box Office: Despite strong reviews, Damien Chazelle's $70 million Neil Armstrong biopic opened below expectations and has just barely made its budget back.
Some box office analysts suggested the controversy surrounding Chazelle's decision not to show the American flag being planted on the Moon could be to blame, not to mention the film's 141-minute run-time and drama-centric focus. Whatever the reason, it's a damn shame.
Verdict: Chazelle serves up a typically stylish, singular effort here, and while some might be deterred by the rather cool, detached nature of Gosling's Armstrong, the actor does a marvellously restrained job representing the man in all of his quiet torment.
Claire Foy also impresses as Armstrong's wife, while the ensemble cast is both vast and uniformly terrific. The Moon landing sequence itself, a mini-masterpiece of technical precision and operatic swell, is honestly worth the price of admission alone.
Its poor box office performance will massively hamper its awards chances, but in a just world this thing would be a front-runner in numerous categories.
