Box Office: Impressively produced for just $1 million, the indie drama has just barely made its svelte budget back on limited theatrical release, and will add plenty to that total on home video. The most minor of successes, then.

Verdict: Though the spine of the narrative is incredibly predictable, Patti Cake$ succeeds largely on the strength of its refreshingly hopeful tone, and a magnificent performance from Australian actress Danielle Macdonald.

With an unexpected universality to its tale, it's easy to get drawn into this charming character piece no matter its familiarity and a few jarring moments of tonal clash.
