Ranking: The Biggest Protagonists From 2016's Summer Blockbusters

5. Professor Xavier (James McAvoy) - X-Men

The Role: The wise mutant leader who continues to foster young mutants and faces off against his toughest opponent yet in the form of an ancient mutant, Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac).

Though Apocalypse doesn't serve up the most compelling Xavier storyline to date, there's still a lot here to like, and as ever, James McAvoy delivers a superb rendition of the character.

Seeing Xavier meet his biggest match yet as he squares off against Apocalypse results in a number of the movie's most memorable moments, and the resolution to his lingering romance with Moira McTaggart (Rose Byrne) is mostly satisfying.

Again, the drama and intrigue doesn't match Days of Future Past, but Xavier is a frequent high-point and continues to be the firm conscience of the X-Men.
