Ranking The Coen Brothers Movies From Worst To Best

4. Inside Llewyn Davis

No Country For Old Men
CBS Films/Studiocanal

Inside Llewyn Davis is another music heavy effort by the Coens and, although a much more somber one than O’ Brother, it is their most accomplished. The movie follows Oscar Isaac as a down on his luck folk musician surfing couch to couch in the hope of getting his big break.

A brilliant character piece with a fantastic soundtrack to back the emotionally gripping narrative, Inside Llewyn Davis is a movie which you really invest in. Oscar Isaac's acting is undeniably moving and, even through all his low moments, you really care about what happens to him. A tragic backstory unfolds through the film which only adds fuel to this particular fire.

Like all Coen films it features a whole host of brilliantly bizarre and enjoyable cameos, each helping to unfurl Isaac's lead more and more (Goodman as usual is a highlight, but Justin Timberlake steals the show for my money). Though incredibly funny at times as well, Inside Llewyn Davis is probably the Coens most sombrely emotive film. It goes to the depths with its character study and emerges as one of the Coens best efforts.
