Ranking The Films Of Alejandro G. Iñárritu From Worst To Best
2. The Revenant
This brutal tale of survival and vengeance is more remembered for the horrors Leonardo Di Caprio put himself through to win that elusive Oscar than anything in the actual film itself.
Yes, Di Caprio gives a fully committed performance to frontiersman Hugh Glass and suffers through freezing waters, harsh climates and raw bison meat in what is a massive showcase for the beloved actor. But, Iñárritu is the unsung hero of this picture along with his ingenious cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. The Revenant is filled with shots and sequences that are incomprehensible to work out how they pulled it off. Sequences that can only be rivalled in scope by Sam Mendes' 1917.
Despite the gorgeous camerawork and dedicated lead performance, The Revenant can struggle in the narrative department. The dialogue is minimal, as is the character development and the film itself can be a long and overly grim experience. You have to appreciate the craftsmanship on display, which is close to being unmatched in most ways, but it is unlikely you'll seek out repeat viewings once you're through. Even still, that first viewing will be more than worth your time.
