Ranking The Films Of Alejandro G. Iñárritu From Worst To Best

3. Amores Perros

The Revenant
New Vision

The first and the best entry in the "Death Trilogy". Amores Perros follows three separate stories connected through a fatal car crash and also has a recurring interest in dogs and their owners. This was Iñárritu's first feature film and it is uncompromising in its approach. Violence and horrific scenes are now to be expected from Iñárritu but at the time this was shocking stuff.

By far, the most uncomfortable moments to watch are the scenes where dog fighting is involved. Iñárritu is smart, he knows what an audience is more likely to care about. When you have limited time to develop a character before you need to move on to the next storyline, putting the wellbeing of a dog at stake is far more gripping and tense to watch.

Amores Perros is a bleak depiction of ambitious but flawed individuals looking for happiness in Mexico City and is entirely unflinching. Each storyline is connected enough to feel necessary but also stands apart on their own. The film is the best directorial debut since Reservoir Dogs.
