Ranking The Potential Of Each Streaming Service
1. Disney+
Estimated Subscribers – 100m
Disney+ reached 100 million subscribers in less than a year. Though that is less than half of Netflix’s total, it is a staggering accomplishment, but hardly surprising given the sheer dominance that Disney have established across the entertainment industry.
They’ve always been a major player, with their animated classics a huge part of the upbringing of most children, but their gradual acquisition and capitalisation upon the Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and Fox brands has seen them ascend to unfathomable heights, covering almost every imaginable demographic.
Disney+ has barely scratched the surface with regards to original content as of yet, though the quality and immediate popularity of the Mandalorian and WandaVision speak for themselves.
It could be argued that they’ve gone overboard with the sheer amount of new Marvel and Star Wars series announced for the next few years, but given that the two are the highest-grossing cinematic franchises of all time, with total worldwide receipts of $32 billion, they know that there’s a wide global audience just waiting to throw money at them.
As more and more content from the ABC Television and 20th/21st Century Fox film catalogue is added (assuming Hulu is eventually folded into it in the United States), Disney+ will continue to aggressively chase Netflix in pursuit of its crown.
What Disney want, they usually get, and with the enviable combination of seemingly unlimited funds and endearing customer brand appeal, you have to wonder who could possibly stop them.
