Ranking What Was Really The Best Film Of Every Year 1990-2021

5. 2017 - Get Out

Get Out Daniel Kaluuya
Universal

Actually won: The Shape of Water.

Guillermo del Toro should have won his Best Picture Oscar for Pan's Labyrinth over a decade earlier, not for The Shape of Water.

That's not to say The Shape of Water is bad, what with its fairytale imagery and haunting love story, it's just that it deprived the most worthy winner, Get Out, from coming out on top.

Jordan Peele's slow-burn horror movie took the world by storm when it was released, telling a story that was at once exquisitely terrifying and bursting with intelligent and harrowing social commentary, which is probably what kept it from winning the top honour, but is exactly why it deserved it.
