Ranking What Was Really The Best Film Of Every Year 1990-2021

30. 1992 - Unforgiven

Lord of the Rings
Universal

Actually won: Unforgiven.

As this article will show, the Academy rarely gets it right, but they crowned the right victor in 1993 with Clint Eastwood's revisionist Western drama Unforgiven, which acts as a sweeping swan song to the genre's golden age and Eastwood's career.

Despite tough competition from fellow nominees The Crying Game and A Few Good Men, Unforgiven's depiction of morality, age and revenge is captivating from the very first frame, and soars with the performances of Eastwood and Gene Hackman.

Beautifully shot, intelligent, and deeply moving, it was a just win, even if it didn't make up for the Academy's past of ignoring the Western genre.
