Recasting The Lord Of The Rings Movies
9. Gollum - Doug Jones
A performer who is mostly known for his work as a practical physical figure. Doug Jones would be a welcomed presence in the role of Gollum. Either using motion capture or a practical costume - albeit scaled down to the height of a hobbit - Jones would easily capture a movement style that reflected the nature of the character.
The actor is also somewhat underrated as well in his vocal work and facial expressions. Jones has a quality to himself and his performances that are entirely non-human. Being able to play creatures of magical quality makes him a perfect fit for a role in Middle-Earth.
The performance that Serkis brought was incredible, but Jones could also play a believable version of the character. His lanky frame would make his version feel malnourished and tortured, playing into the concept of how the ring has damaged him both physically and mentally.
For a character that would require the amount of dedication, physical and vocal performance as this, Jones would be the exact right direction to go in.
