To sell the importance of this position and match the aura that the character has someone with a real sense of prestige would be needed. Having been a decorated actor for all of his career, and changing consistently to match his position in the industry McDowell is a dignified presence who would undoubtedly bring a strong persona to the role.

The character would need to feel believably evil, and this is something that McDowell could sell masterfully. His facial expressions and use of voice have always had a malicious quality to them that instils a feeling of discomfort.

Having made his name for playing Alex in A Clockwork Orange this actor is known for his villainous turns, but he can also feel appropriate as a friendly figure. This would work well as it would highlight the light within Saruman that was corrupted by his desires for power.

Sir Christopher Lee is an irreplaceable talent in the world of film and TV. Casting Malcolm McDowell would do justice to the legacy that Lee left behind in the role.
