19. The Bride!
Once Maggie Gyllenhaal's bold reimagining of The Bride of Frankenstein came out last March, it was immediately clear why Netflix stepped away from the project over apparent budgetary concerns.
Ultimately the Warner Bros.-backed film was a massive creative swing - a $90 million movie about the ghost of Frankenstein author Mary Shelley possessing a woman living in 1930s Chicago (both played by Jessie Buckley), who then embarks on a Bonnie and Clyde-esque crime spree with Frankenstein's monster (Christian Bale).
Reports detailed a hellish post-production where Gyllenhaal bristled with executives over the film's more transgressive elements, all while poor test screenings resulted in reshoots.
Couple all this with obnoxious marketing which tried its damnedest to ignore the Mary Shelley possession subplot and it was painfully clear that Warner Bros. was in damage control mode in the months before release.
To the shock of nobody, The Bride! ended up grossing a disastrous $24 million worldwide, all while we wait to see if time vindicates it as a misunderstood cult classic.
