Say what you will about Disney's industrious glut of live-action remakes of their animated classics, but they generally put the full weight of their marketing machine behind each release, ensuring you can't not know about them.
But the recent Moana remake was a strange exception - rather than intensify their marketing blitz in the months and weeks approaching its July release, the Mouse House pulled back, likely due to box office tracking suggesting that an underperformance was on the horizon.
Yet even ignoring the reduced volume of Moana's marketing, the quality of it didn't help - the trailers failed to sell this remake as anything but a more drab and lifeless shot-for-shot retelling of the vibrant, well-aged original.
Releasing it just three weeks after Toy Story 5, which absolutely tore up the box office, didn't help much either, and so amid poor reviews, it was hardly a surprise that Moana grossed just $321.9 million against its gargantuan $250 million budget.
