Red Sonja Movie Reboot: 10 Things We Need To See
6. A Script That Draws Heavily On Gail Simone
Acclaimed comic book writer Gail Simone has worked on a great many prestigious titles over the years - Deadpool, Action Comics, Wonder Woman - but in some instances, her writing has truly elevated the comic in question to from also-ran to must-read status.
Not content with having achieved this with DC's Batgirl, Simone also brought Red Sonja to a higher level. Starting in late 2013 with the aforementioned Queen of Plagues, Simone collaborated with artist Walter Geovani on an 18-issue run that made Red Sonja one of the best-reviewed, best-selling Dynamite titles of recent years.
Nor is the writer by any means done with Sonja, having returned to the character on, amongst others, Red Sonja/Conan, Swords of Sorrow, and most recently Red Sonja/Tarzan.
Let there be no mistake here; a great many Red Sonja comics might be considered guilty pleasures, contrived to place the heroine in perilous scenarios and give the artist an excuse to draw her from voyeuristic angles.
There's none of that in Simone and Geovani's run. While sexuality certainly isn't taken out of the equation, these comics present a gruff, no-nonsense take on the character who packs a serious punch in all senses of the word.
This is precisely the Sonja we need to see on the big screen. We can but hope screenwriter Ashley Edward Miller realises this.
