Red Sonja Movie Reboot: 10 Things We Need To See
5. A Female Director
Red Sonja, as we've acknowledged, was originally created by men, with writer and artist team Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor Smith drawing on the writing of Robert E Howard. The same was of course true of Wonder Woman, the creation of William Moulton Marston.
This being the case, it wouldn't be fair to suggest that a male director simply wouldn't 'get' Red Sonja. Even so, as might be evident from Gail Simone's Red Sonja comics and Patty Jenkins' work on Wonder Woman, a female perspective can help to fully realise a female character.
Let's face it, the original Red Sonja movie didn't necessarily do wonders with a male director, even though Richard Fleischer had done some great work in earlier years like The Vikings and Fantastic Voyage.
And after a look at the filmographies of the directors who've been linked to Red Sonja since - Doug Aarniokoski and Simon West - one might be forgiven for not expecting great things from either of them.
So who should call the shots on Red Sonja now? An obvious contender would be Lexi Alexander, who more than proved her ability to pull off over-the-top comic book action on 2008's Punisher: War Zone, and has since done great work on a number of TV shows.
Of course, an action background needn't be a prerequisite; after all, Patty Jenkins' first movie Monster wasn't exactly all stunts and special effects.
