Red Sonja Movie Reboot: 10 Things We Need To See
3. Epic Visual Scope
This is another point which should probably go without saying, but let's say it anyway: if we're entering into Red Sonja's Hyborian Age, it needs to look huge.
No, we don't need gargantuan, Lord of the Rings-sized battle sequences; indeed, it might be a refreshing change if we didn't have our heroine facing off against some cataclysmic, end-of-the-world scenario. Certainly none of us need to see another whirling vortex in the sky as long as we live.
Even so, we do need to get a sense of the length and breadth of the Hyborian world. Mountains, forests, fields and deserts; magnificent castles; dark, foreboding ruins; rustic villages. And, given this is Red Sonja, we most definitely need a rough and rowdy inn or two.
Fantasy films of this nature should be a production designer's dream come true, as they offer up an opportunity to present a world both recognisable as our own, yet so far removed from the world as we know it.
That said, sword and sorcery has been done plenty of times and has wound up having a fairly distinctive look, so let's hope that those charged with designing Red Sonja's world are able to be a little more creative.
