Red Sonja Movie Reboot: 10 Things We Need To See
2. R-Rated Action
This is kind of a big one. We've had Wonder Woman and Tomb Raider; we've got Captain Marvel and hopefully many more female-fronted blockbusters on their way, aimed first and foremost at family audiences.
All of which is a great thing, not least for the young girls going out to see these movies. But Red Sonja is one character who really should be gearing towards mature viewers.
Even if they do find a way to make her costume look a bit less pornographic, this isn't Wonder Woman we're dealing with. Red Sonja doesn't tend to deal with problems by appealing to the better nature of everyone she meets, and serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration.
Rather, she tends to prefer fixing things by bloodily hacking her enemies to bits with her lethally sharp sword, then getting herself thoroughly drunk and possibly having a bit of meaningless sex along the way. (Yeah, she's a bit like Jessica Jones, but with a lot less of that inner conflict problem.)
Yes, we realise we already said the movie needs to look epic, which tends to mean a big budget; and, even with the success of Deadpool and Logan, studios still tend to shy away from throwing too much money behind R-rated movies. But hopefully a balance can be found there.
