Renfield Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

Downs...

5. Not Enough Nicolas Cage

Renfield Nicolas Cage
Universal

Nicolas Cage gives a sublimely unhinged, unapologetically campy performance throughout Renfield - and more on that later - but anyone lured in by The Cage's presence might end up feeling a little short-changed by his screen time.

Sure, the movie is called Renfield at the end of the day, but given Cage's popularity and the incredibly inspired choice to cast him as Dracula - an apparent dream role of his - it's a damn shame he's a supporting character with a capital S.

Cage appears intermittently throughout the film and hogs the screen every single time he does, but all in all he's probably in the movie for around 30 minutes in total, ensuring there are long chasms of time where he's nowhere to be seen.

Nicholas Hoult does a laudable job of holding down the fort in his absence, but shifting the focus to feature more of Cage's Dracula would've most certainly boosted the entertainment value.
