RIP Bob Hoskins: His 10 Greatest Roles

7. Vivian Van Damm - Mrs Henderson Presents (2005)

Playing Vivian Van Damm, manager of the notorious Windmill Theatre, opposite Judi Dench's Laura Henderson, Hoskins picked up his final Golden Globe nomination for Mrs Henderson Presents. Forsaking his trademark gruff cockney accent for a more refined, clipped one, the role sits unconventionally beside some of Hoskins' more rough performances, and blends comedy with drama easily. Hoskins holds his own in his scenes with the extremely witty Dame Judi Dench, making for some of the most memorable and funny exchanges of his career. Directed by Stephen Frears, Mrs Henderson Presents is a quintessentially British film, with a host of British treasures making up the cast, and it helped Hoskins reaffirm his status as an iconic actor after a fair few years in relative obscurity. However, he was unfairly snubbed at the Academy Awards yet again, with the film only garnering two nominations and no wins, showing that despite cementing himself as a beloved character actor among film-goers and those in the business alike, he was never recognised by formal awards in the way that he deserved.
