Rob Zombie's 5 Defining Moments As A Director

1. The Devil's Rejects

The Devil's Rejects I wasn't sold on The Devil's Rejects the first time I saw it. Prior to this Zombie had only made House of 1000 Corpses and that's what I was hoping to see again in this sequel. However the thing about Devil's is it grows on you every time you watch it -so much so that even now it's still as good and I must have seen it about 20 times. The Devil's Rejects is the movie House of 1000 Corpses should have been had Zombie had Zombie opted for a more realistic approach rather than the psychedelic mind f**k that it was. If 1000 Corpses was too cartoonish for many people then Reject's is the same movie transplanted to the real world. This time though the homicidal Firefly family find themselves the hunted as Texas Sheriff John Quincey Wydell (the brother of a former victim) unearths the truth that lurks in the house the previous movie was set in. What is truly bizarre though with The Devil's Rejects is that by the end of the movie you actually end up rooting for the bad guys as it turns out that despite how vile they actually are they are the lesser of two evils in this film with Wydell's own violent methods far exceeding their own. The family are no nicer than they were in the first film - in fact because they are less cartoon like they actually appear worse than before - but like it or not Zombie does such a good job of painting the typical 'good guy' as a monster that you forget who the real monsters actually are. As good as The Devil's Rejects is the one moment that truly defines it comes at the very end. As the battered and bloody Otis, Baby and Spaulding attempt to escape 'justice' they are met by a blockade of cars and Police Officers with very big guns. Set to the tune of Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd the moments that follow are a thing of beauty - bloody beauty but beauty none the less. And it is this genius cinematic moment that will forever define the film making skills of Rob Zombie and I'd be surprised if he ever manages to surpass it.
