Robert Downey Jr: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

3. Leo Wiggins - Johnny Be Good (1988)

Robert-Downey-Jr-as-Leo-Wiggins-in-Johnny-Be-Good-robert-downey-jr-29691981-1360-768 Here's an '80s movie that tried so hard to be an '80s movie that it just failed completely: I don't think many people are even aware that this thing exists, and it's probably better that way, to be totally honest. The movie stars Anthony Michael Hall in the main role, as a football player who has great future prospects, but seems far more interested in making nothing of his life and hanging out. As his best friend, it's our man Robert Downey Jr., who gives... well, it's certainly a performance. And it's not a total tragedy, to be fair, and the way the character was written probably didn't help, but Downey Jr. is just irritating as hell in this one. His character, Leo, is prone to making weird noises, exploding randomly into strange rants, and spends most of the movie just chewing the scenery and being annoying. I'm sure diehard Downey fans will find some redeemable qualities in this (seeing him so young, perhaps), but for me, this is the great actor at something of a low point.
