Robert Duvall: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

2. Caspary - The Lightship

Whilst some will say that Robert Duvall's frankly absurd performance in the little-known 1985 flick The Lightship is something to behold, we'll say that it's something to avoid. If you've ever wanted to see Robert Duvall acting like an absolute crazy person, though, this might be at least worth a watch for the sheer weirdness of it. Directed by Jerzy Skolimowski, the film is slow and boring; Duvall is still the best part. But "best part" implies that he's doing good work. What we really mean is that what he does is occasionally distracting enough to keep you from falling asleep - for a while, at least. So what's so bizarre about his turn here? Pretty much, Duvall plays a flamboyant dandy - wearing a cream suit and hat, he swallows up the screen in a performance that is nothing like anything else he's ever done. We're pretty sure it doesn't work.
