Robert Rodriguez & Danny Trejo Return For Machete Kills

Danny Trejo in talks to reprise his R-Rated character with shooting to begin in April.

Robert Rodriguez's next film will be Machete Kills, a sequel to his 2010 Grindhouse B-movie starring Danny Trejo that will shoot in April, according to Deadline. Kyle Ward (writer of in-development Kane & Lynch) has completed the follow-up screenplay that he has been developing with Rodriguez & Marcel Rodriguez, with Trejo in talks to reprise the R-rated title character. €œThe fan response to the Machete character has been fanatical since his first appearance,€ Rodriguez said. €œMachete is truly a super hero and Machete Kills will be bigger and more ambitious than the first time.€ The sequel will find Machete hired by the U.S. government and ordered to travel down to Mexico to battle a madman cartel and eccentric billionaire arms dealer who wants to start World War III. Sounds like a plot for a James Bond movie and wouldn't you know it, just like Moonraker took James Bond into space, Machete Kills secret weapon to start this global war is planted in space. Will we see 'Machete in Space'? Many of the surviving cast from the original will be asked to return with Rodriguez expecting to secure the majority for a comeback. The original 2010 film, an expanded version of the Grindhouse trailer B-movie homage that appeared on Rodriguez & Quentin Tarantino's 2007 film, grossed $44 million on a $10.5 million budget and was enough of a hit to warrant a sequel. Rodriguez actually hopes to eventually make a trilogy with 'Machete Kills Again'. Although not stated, it is most likely Rodriguez will only be producing again and not himself directing. Rodriguez protege Ethan Maniquis helmed the first movie under the guidance of the more experienced helmer. Whether that ends up being Maniquis is unclear as a couple of days he became subject of a lawsuit filled against him by writer/director Yvonne Delarosa who claims he stole the idea to the Machete film from her. His name is not mentioned in Deadline's story. Machete Kills is a Quick Draw Production, produced by Rodriguez, Rodnyansky, and Quick Draw€™s Aaron Kaufman and Iliana Nikolic, and Sergei Bespalov and Rick Schwartz. Worldwide sales are being sold in Berlin.
