Robin Hood Review: 2 Ups & 7 Downs

Ups...

2. Ben Mendelsohn & Jamie Foxx's Ridiculous Performances

If there are two actors in the movie who provide temporary relief from the relative blandness surrounding them, it's unquestionably Ben Mendelsohn and Jamie Foxx, who play the Sheriff of Nottingham and Little John respectively.

Mendelsohn is pretty much acting in a completely different movie to everybody else, devouring the scenery so voraciously it's surprising the film even has a set left to shoot on.

Straight out of the Gary Oldman School of Glorious Overacting, Mendelsohn's cartoonish performance is about as fun as the movie ever gets.

Though Foxx appears and disappears out of the movie semi-randomly at points, he also brings some agreeably manic energy to the role of Robin's mentor, selling John's fiery vengeance and honestly proving far more fun and interesting than Robin himself.

Their efforts sadly aren't enough to save the movie, but they at least seem the most in-tune with what the movie actually is, giving themselves over to the silliness and just having a laugh with it.
