RoboCop: 4 Things That Worked (And 6 That Sucked)

7. The Suit €“ It's Not That Bad

We all despised the suit. As soon as the first pictures were released, everyone hated the suit. Why was it black? Why did it look like rubber? What€™s with the human hand? Comments such as RoboBat, RoboCrap and RubberCop were thrown around in forums to describe the redesigned suit. The original is a design classic. You show it to anyone and they will tell you it€™s RoboCop. And not only has it stood the test of time, it still looks cool and modern. So the decision to totally redesign it was a brave one. It€™s akin to someone radically redesigning the Batsuit. RoboCop is the original RoboCop suit. The film begins with Murphy in a silver suit, it doesn€™t look anywhere near as awesome as the original but it is a fair, modern-day reworking of the classic design. Later, after receiving feedback from a focus group, Raymond Sellers orders the suit to be altered to be more €˜€™tactical,€™€™ and by tactical he means make it black. I was hiding behind gritted teeth in anticipation of the reveal of the black version of the suit. As the camera panned up from the legs, to the torso, neck and head, I was fully expecting to hate it but I surprised myself. Honestly, I didn€™t mind it. I€™m not saying that it€™s a brilliant redesign but instead that it didn€™t generate the convulsions and uncontrollable retching that I was expecting. It didn€™t look rubbery and Kinnerman€™s robotic actions did a lot to make it look robotic. The flip down visor was annoying though €“ you just wish it would stay down permanently because when it€™s up, Kinnaman looks like he is about to go deep sea diving. Even the human hand didn€™t present itself as much of a problem as originally perceived. You barely notice it. It would have been better if it wasn€™t there but it€™s not the cinema crime of the century that I was expecting it to be. The film has an annoying habit of taking place in daylight which isn't flattering to the suit, it looks better at night. At the end of the movie, RoboCop goes back to being silver. I imagine that must have been the studio ordered reshoots that were a response to the negative reaction to the black version. Sadly they kept the flip down visor and human hand.
