Robocop: The Evolution Of Paul Verhoeven's Classic In 7 Trailers

1. Robocop (2013)

When I first watched the trailer for the Robocop reboot my initial reaction was simply "Meh". I wasn't impressed but neither was I upset. Then I took to the internet and was shocked at how many of you out there hated it. My only real gripe is that they appear to have made Robocop too human. What made him compelling in the original movie was how he had the capacity to remember things but he was far from 'human'. By the looks of the trailer he remembers plenty and experiences all kinds of 'normal' emotions and with great articulation. He appears to be a man with a robotic body rather than a robot with a human mind. Beyond that I have very little to complain about. The biggest bones of contention amongst the internet community appear to be the casting (if you include the animated series Robocop has been played by 5 different actors already), the black suit (it's an upgraded suit and the original does appear) and the overall tone which seems far more serious than the satirical original. I would suggest you look back at the trailer for the 1987 original and then tell me whether that seemed all that satirical? It looks like a sci-fi action movie at best. Do I think the new trailer is good? No not especially, but I also know that no matter what has happened in the decade and a half since the original nothing will ever be able to take away my love and appreciation for that film. In my mind there will always be only one true Robocop but if I get the chance to see him resurrected at the cinema (because I was 5 when the original hit the multiplex) then I'll be damned if I'm going to let something like the word 'reboot' stand in my way. Whether you feel the same is up to you. Will you be queuing to buy tickets? As Robocop would say, it's "Your move, creep!"
