3. Saw II - The Nerve Gas House

Game: Corrupt cop Eric Matthews' son has been kidnapped by Jigsaw, who tells Matthews that he just needs to talk to Jigsaw for a couple of hours and then his son will be freed. His son, meanwhile, is trapped in a house with seven ex-convicts who were framed by Matthews in the past. They are slowly being poisoned by a nerve agent and must survive a series of brutal traps to obtain the antidotes.

This one is awesome.

Of all these games, the Nerve Gas House is quite possibly the most complex and cleverly put-together, with all its riddles, clues and twists. In fact, one could easily adapt this into a real-life Saw-themed escape room.

Aside from the wickedly smart puzzle at the heart of the game, it's also full of brilliantly horrifying individual traps, and the stakes are further raised when one of the players, Xavier (Franky G), starts killing the others himself. Speaking of which, this game also deserves credit for the characterisation. There are a lot of different characters playing this game, yet they all feel clearly defined and reasonably developed, and all of the actors do a rock-solid job.

The game does feel rushed at times, and it seems like there were several other traps that the film didn't show; in retrospect, Saw II should've been half-an-hour longer. Still, the film delivers a fantastically brutal ending that compensates for the iffy pacing, and ends the game on a soaring high.
