20 Scariest Horror Movies Of The 2020s (So Far)

6. Weapons

Weapons
Warner Bros.

Zach Cregger's Weapons is pulse-quickening in a way entirely unlike his previous film Barbarian, lingering as it does on the uncanny and unexplained surrounding the disappearance of seventeen schoolchildren in an unassuming Pennsylvania town.

Not unlike vampires, witches are tricky to make scary in contemporary horror, yet by colliding witchcraft lore with the sensibilities of a modern suburban town, Cregger makes it feel howlingly fresh - and terrifyingly believable.

While Weapons is absolutely filled with surreal absurdity and black comedy, Cregger crucially never lets it overpower the anxious tension of its central setup.

The result is a wildly unpredictable film which doesn't feel the need to over-explain its witchy antagonist Gladys - played to Oscar-winning perfection by Amy Madigan - but instead let the audience bathe in some incredibly Bad Vibes ahead of a climax that's nothing if not immensely cathartic.

Needless to say, Weapons confirmed Cregger to be an auteur in his own right, ensuring horror fans will be lining up around the block to see anything else he makes from this point.
