20 TERRIFYING Scenes In Non Horror Movies

Bo Burnham's Eighth Grade is a masterfully wrought dramatisation of the soul-crushing awkwardness of youth, following anxiety-riddled high schooler Kayla Day (Elsie Fisher) in her final week of eighth grade.

Burnham's film remains one of cinema's most realistic and empathetic depictions of the high school experience, culminating in an almost unbearably unsettling sequence you might need to watch through splayed fingers.

At the end of the second act, Kayla gets a lift home with a friend of a friend, Riley (Daniel Zolghadri), who eventually stops the car, gets into the back with Kayla, and initiates a game of Truth or Dare.

Riley soon enough removes his shirt and dares Kayla to do the same, but she refuses, prompting Riley to angrily dress himself, drive Kayla home, and insist he simply wanted to help her get some sexual experience.

It goes without saying that this scene could've certainly had a far more nightmarish outcome, but it's so fraught with gut-wrenching tension, and agonisingly dragged out for all of its 10 minutes, that it's ultimately more dread-soaked than most actual horror films.
