Scarlett Johansson: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

3. Janet Leigh - Hitchcock (2012)

It's not surprising that a film that seemed so confident in its terrible make-up effects would be saddled with other deal-breaking issues, and Hitchcock's worst failure is that it makes both Scarlett Johansson and Janet Leigh look like terrible actresses. There is very little depth to the film, which had an opportunity to capture an important beat in industry history, but which failed completely thanks to its aspirations to be apparently completely forgettable. And worst of all, for a film that aims so low, it cannot even achieve what should have been its most base aspiration - for some semblance of authenticity - which isn't helped by the fact that Anthony Hopkins' Hitchcock wears horribly off-putting prosthetics that are both comical and comically distracting. Johansson meanwhile is terrible, managing the rare feat of both under- and over-acting, and the idea that anyone could be as taken with her as Hitchcock supposedly is is as grotesque a suggestion as the nose on Hopkins' face. The biggest misstep of all was attempting to recreate the infamous shower scene, which ended up looking like a spoof, and it's never at all clear whether Johansson is apeing Leigh's style of performance, or just isn't getting a handle on the material.
