Scream Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
1. The Big Reveals Are A Mixed Bag
There won't be even the vaguest hint of spoilers here, but if you're hoping that the fifth Scream manages to deliver a battery of climactic plot twists and reveals on par with the better ones in the series (that is, 1 and 4), you should probably lower your expectations.
There are certainly some interesting ideas at play late in the movie, but the basic whodunnit aspect of the film is fairly standard fare for the series and arguably even quite predictable.
While no Scream sequel could be blamed for failing to meet the brilliance of the original Billy/Stu reveal, what transpires here doesn't feel nearly as smart or well thought-out as even the Jill/Charlie reveal in Scream 4.
That's not to say the third act payoff is bad because it absolutely isn't, but it simply lacks the wow factor fans will unavoidably be expecting.
These issues aside, though, Scream is certainly still a worthy addition to the franchise. Here's what it gets right...
